Abstract
The cajuputi tree (Melaleuca cajuputi P.) is one of the species native to peatl soil that can grow and adapt to extreme environments, such as acidic soil, nutrient-poor soil, and waterlogged soil. The rhizosphere of cajuputi trees harbors microorganisms such as rhizobacteria that can produce the growth hormone indole acetic acid (IAA). Rhizosphere soil samples were collected from three individual water hyacinth plants in peat soil at the Sriwijaya University Agricultural Arboretum, yielding a total of 16 bacterial isolates. Qualitative testing using Salkowski reagent indicated that three isolates (K2, K4, and K9) exhibited a faint orange color change, suggesting potential production of indole derivatives, specifically indole-3-carboxaldehyde. Quantitative testing of the three isolates using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 530 nm showed that isolate K2 produced 4.52 ppm of indole, isolate K4 produced 5.97 ppm, and isolate K9 produced 6.75 ppm. Bacterial identification based on phenotypic characteristics indicated that the three isolates belonged to the genus Bacillus.
