Abstract

Background: Oral mucositis is a common side effect of chemotherapy in children with cancer, which can reduce quality of life and interfere with treatment. Standard therapies such as chlorhexidine are not fully effective, prompting the need for a safe and effective adjunctive therapy. Randu honey is known to have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and tissue-healing properties. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of randu honey as an adjunct to standard treatment in accelerating the healing of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in pediatric patients. Methods: This open-label randomized controlled trial involved 60 children aged 5–<18 years with chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang. Subjects were randomly assigned to two groups: intervention (standard treatment + randu honey) and control (standard treatment only). Healing duration and adverse events were observed and statistically analyzed. Results: Standard treatment combined with Randu honey was more effective than standard treatment (NNT 3.33, RR 1.45).The median healing duration in the randu honey group was shorter than in the control group (3 vs. 5 days; p < 0.05). Reported side effects were mild and tolerable, including localized stinging. Conclusion: Randu honey as an adjunct to standard treatment is more effective in accelerating the healing of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in children, with minimal and tolerable side effects. Keywords: randu honey, oral mucositis, chemotherapy, children, healing
