Abstract

This study analyzes Indonesia's strategy in responding to the trade war dynamics with the European Union through the lens of neorealist theory. The trade tensions triggered by protectionist policies such as RED II and the EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) have significantly impacted Indonesia, particularly in the palm oil export sector and through the nickel ore export ban. Using a qualitative method and descriptive-analytical approach, this research focuses on the use of economic statecraft, balancing strategies, and the enhancement of Indonesia's economic capabilities in facing pressure from the EU. The findings show that Indonesia has employed a combination of legal diplomacy through the WTO, retaliatory policies, and the strengthening of alternative trade alliances as a form of balancing within an anarchic international system. From a neorealist perspective, Indonesia’s strategy reflects efforts to protect national interests, increase global bargaining power, and secure economic sovereignty. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of neorealism's application in international economic relations, particularly in the case of developing countries like Indonesia facing pressure from major trading blocs.
