Abstract

Heavy metal contamination in seafood, particularly in blood cockles (Anadara granosa), has become a significant issue regarding food safety. Blood cockles are a marine organism widely consumed by the public as an alternative source of animal protein. This study aims to determine the concentrations of the heavy metals lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in the tissues of blood cockles sold at various markets in Palembang City, compare the results with applicable quality standards, and evaluate the potential health risks based on the Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) value. The method used is dry ashing destruction according to SNI 2354.13:2014 and SNI 2354.5:2011, with a sample weight of 5 grams from each location. The analysis results show that Pb concentrations range from 0.06–0.015mg/kg and Zn from 3.13–9.59mg/kg. These values exceed the maximum limits set in BPOM Regulation No. 9 of 2022 and the Decree of the Director General of POM of 1989. However, they indicate a low health risk, as evidenced by the EDI values not exceeding the Reference Dose (RfD) established by the US EPA. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that blood cockles sold in several markets in Palembang City are contaminated with Pb and Zn heavy metals, but at levels considered safe for consumption.
