Abstract
This study examines the representation of the precariat in the film Upstream (逆行人生) using Roland Barthes semiotic approach, which analyzes meaning through three levels: denotation, connotation, and myth. By analyzing eight key scenes, the research reveals how the film visually and narratively depicts the socioeconomic transition of a former tech worker into a food delivery courier within an exploitative digital economy. The representation highlights not only economic uncertainty and the loss of social protection but also how ideological myths such as meritocracy, work flexibility, and individual success are constructed to obscure structural inequality. Through visual signs like work uniforms, algorithmic notifications, and performance pressure, Upstream reproduces the narrative of digital capitalism, portraying exploitation as a personal challenge while subtly offering moments of worker solidarity as symbolic resistance. This study concludes that film, as a cultural text, does not merely reflect reality but actively shapes collective consciousness regarding the position of the working class in the contemporary economic order.
