Abstract

This research about synthesis and characterization of hydroxyapatite from chicken egg shell and the effect of chitosan addition on hydroxyapatite mechanical properties has been done successfully. This research aimed to acknowledge the effect of temperature and calcination duration on hydroxyapatite synthesis, to acknowledge the morphology of hydroxyapatite, to know the elements which contained on hydroxyapatite, and to acknowledge the effect of chitosan addition on the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite. The synthesis of hydroxyapatite was carried out with precursors Ca(OH)2 and (NH4)2HPO4 and was composited with chitosan. The precipitated HAp is calcined with variations in temperature and calcination duration. Characterization of HAp crystalline structures using XRD, HAp morphologies characterization using SEM-EDS, and characterization of mechanical properties for hardness using vickers hardness and for compressive strength using autograph. The result was shown that calcium concentration on chicken egg shell as 87.80%. The sharp diffraction peak of hydroxyapatite at 2θ= 31.82 was gained from temperature at 1000OC during 2 hours. SEM describes that particles morphologies from HAp form agglomeration and pores. EDS describes that Ca/P ratio of 1.713. The addition of chitosan to composites tends to decrease the hardness (63,56%), However, increases the composite compressive strength (64,71%) and elasticity composite (71,16%)
