Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of social criticism toward marginalized groups in the film Agak Laen using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis. As a form of mass communication, film functions not only as entertainment but also as a powerful medium to express social inequalities and the realities of marginalized communities. This research adopts a qualitative method with Barthes’ semiotic theory, focusing on three layers of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. Data were collected through observations of seven selected scenes that depict social criticism of marginalized people. The findings reveal that Agak Laen effectively presents criticism of various social injustices, including structural poverty, stigma against ex-convicts, economic inequality, discrimination toward people with disabilities, and systemic pressure faced by the lower class. The use of symbols, dialogues, and visuals in the film significantly contributes to constructing the narrative of social critique. Through Barthes’ perspective, it is evident that the film conveys not only direct reality but also deeper cultural and ideological meanings hidden beneath the humor and storyline. This research is expected to contribute academically to visual communication studies and serve as a reference in understanding film as a medium of social criticism.
