Abstract

The physical properties of soil are one of the determinants of soil quality in a particular area. The better the condition of the soil's physical properties, the better the growth and development of plants, thereby enabling optimal production yields. Soil physical properties influence soil fertility both directly and indirectly. This study aims to determine the total soil pore space using particle density calculations and saturated water content, as well as to compare the determination of total soil pore space using the saturated water content method and particle density. The method employed is a soil survey with a very detailed observation level. The study was conducted on oil palm plantation land at Sriwijaya University from July 2023 to November 2023. The variables observed werethe determination of total soil pore space using particle density calculations and saturated water content. The results showed an average saturated water content value of 58.6% and total soil pore space of 67.7%. The results of this research show that the value of the total pore space of the soil is dominated by the very high class with 8 out of 10 samples with the highest value being 80% and the lowest value being 56% and the relationship between saturated water content and soil particle density being very strong with the value the percentage reached 95% for water content. From these results it was concluded that water content and density of soil particles were related to each other with a very strong level of relationship.
