Abstract
Fatigue is a phenomenon of material damage due to repeated loading, it is known that when a metal is subjected to repetitive stress the metal vvill break at a much lovver voltage than the voltage required to cause fracture of the static load. This study discusses the effect of normalizing heat treatment on the fatigue resistance of gray cast iron material, by comparing fatigue resistance (S-N curve) between the untreated cast iron material and through normalizing heat treatment. The normalizing process is preheated at 400 ° C for 10 minutes, then heated to 910 ° C for 60 minutes and 90 minutes, then cooling normalizing in the open air. After that dilakukuan fatigue testing machine with repeated torsion fatigue testing mechine. The fracture results of this fatigue test vvere observed by using scannning electron microscope (SEM) to determine crack propagation characteristics.The test results data based on break time and calculations shovved on cast iron specimens with 60 minutes normalizing treatment showed the highest cycle of 15600 cycles, 12200 cycles without specimen, and normalizing 90 minutes 9850 cycling specimens. The test results of its SEM showed an early crack initiated in the structure of graphite contained in the cast iron, this is because the structure of the eraDhite tlake sharo and Dointed causing stress concentrations at the edges when subjected to repetitive stress which then propagate the crack between graphite and lead specimens be broken..
