Abstract

The increasing scarcity of clean water due to pollution and overexploitation has driven the development of efficient and sustainable separation technologies. One promising solution is polymer-based membrane technology. This study aims to evaluate the characteristics, mechanical properties, and water treatment performance of membranes made from Polyethersulfone (PES), modified with Silver Nitrate (AgNO₃) at three concentration levels (1 wt%, 1.25 wt%, and 1.5 wt%), and fabricated under a direct current (DC) electric field of 20,000 Volts for 15 seconds during the casting process. Microstructure observation was conducted using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), mechanical properties were tested using a tensile test following ASTM D 638 Type IV, and membrane performance was analyzed through Clean Water Permeability (CWP) testing. The results show that the addition of AgNO₃ affects membrane morphology and pore distribution. The membrane with 1 wt% AgNO₃ exhibited the best performance, with uniform pore distribution, the highest tensile strength (4.20 MPa), and the highest flux (4.20 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹·bar⁻¹). In contrast, higher concentrations led to particle agglomeration, reducing porosity, mechanical strength, and filtration performance. Overall, the combination of chemical modification and electric field application effectively enhances PES membrane performance, particularly at the optimal 1 wt% AgNO₃ concentration. These findings indicate the potential of PES–AgNO₃ membranes for efficient clean water treatment systems.
