Abstract

Global climate change caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO₂), is a major global challenge today. Rubber plants (Hevea brasiliensis) have great potential for carbon absorption through photosynthesis and storage in the form of biomass. This study aims to predict the potential for carbon sequestration in 12- and 20-year-old rubber plants in Babat Village, Penukal District, PALI Regency. The research method uses a non-destructive approach with allometric equations to estimate plant carbon. Observations were carried out systematically on sample plots according to the age of the rubber stands, by taking 15 rubber plant samples in each plot for biomass measurement. The results showed that the diameter of the rubber plant stem affected the amount of biomass, carbon content, and stored CO₂ equivalent. 20-year-old rubber plants had a higher biomass (166.33–191.41 kg/tree) than 12-year-old plants (105.33–108.88 kg/tree). Carbon content also increased from 49.50–51.17 kg/tree at 12 years of age to 78.18–89.96 kg/tree at 20 years of age. Similarly, the average CO₂ equivalent increased from 181.51–187.63 kg/tree to 286.64–329.86 kg/tree. It can be concluded that with increasing age, rubber trees increasingly contribute to carbon sequestration and play an important role in climate change mitigation, with 20-year-old trees showing significantly higher carbon storage potential than 12-year-old trees.
