Abstract
Shrimp is highly susceptible to quality degradation, particularly during handling on sondong fishing vessels in the Banyuasin waters. Flake ice, as a coolant, has limitations such as rapid melting and nutrient loss, which can compromise freshness. Waste oil from blue swimming crabs (Portunus pelagicus) has potential as a raw material for organic Bio-PCM (Phase Change Material) to maintain shrimp quality. This study aimed to design and evaluate Bio-PCM derived from crab oil using SEM-EDS, FTIR, and Thermal Conductivity Analyzer for characterization. Cooling performance was tested under three treatments: flake ice, pure Bio-PCM, and a combination of both (mix). Results showed that the Bio-PCM had a porous morphology and a melting point of approximately 2.9 °C, although the addition of carbon black did not significantly enhance its thermal conductivity. The mix treatment was most effective in reducing shrimp temperature (14.7 °C), air temperature (9.3 °C), and coolant temperature (6.9 °C), with a cooling effectiveness of -0.0467 °C/min. Organoleptic tests confirmed that the mix treatment produced the highest freshness score (8.4). Although the initial cost of Bio-PCM is higher, the combination with flake ice offers an optimal balance between performance and cost-efficiency, making it a promising solution for scoop nets fishers in preserving shrimp quality.
