Abstract
Friction welding is one of the Solutions of dissimilar metal joint vvhich is difficult to joint with liquid welding. It includes a type of solid-state welding without filler metal, no electricity or other energy sources used but uses a pressure method. Two materials are placed in contact condition and relative motion under pressure, then the friction will increase the temperature on the contact surface (interface) until they reach forge temperature. Then the axial pressure is given axially, plastic deformation then they joined cools and forms a bond in a solid State. Variations of rotational speeds (650 rpm, 800 rpm, 1020 rpm and 1500 rpm). The aim of the author is to investigate the connection processes between aluminum alloy and copper alloy with friction welding method. A new phase of joining different material will be formed (the intermetallic phase) between Al and Cu then analyzes the strength, hardness, composition and microstructure in the weld joint area. From the results of XRF research obtained on Cu material was pure copper (Cu 99.95%) and on Al material was pure aluminum (lxxx series). Diffusion occurs on the interface between Al and Cu which produces an intermetallic phase or a new compound, namely Al2Cu (khatyrkite). Obtained from the results of the XRD test, the main peaks forming AI2Cu appear. This compound is brittle, from the bending test results the strength of the results of Al-Cu joints tends to be weak. Metallography result, the specimens were etched using a solution of NaOFI and water. Observations on the AL-Cu interface show that the new Al2Cu (khatyrkite) and Al-Cu compound phase parallel to the interface interdiffusion. This compounds color were grey which is different from aluminum and corroded when immersed in NaOH etching. Bending strength increases as the highest rotation speed increases by an average of 2.31 Kgf / mm2. Vickers hardness valuc at the Al-Cu conncction point has an average value of 136.24 HV.
