Abstract
This final year project paper is the idea and initial step to establish the cutting tools in common lathe machine by utilizing used leaf springs of HINO FM260 car. This research aims to observe and compare the hardness and microstructure of HSS cutting tools with the one which utilizes the used leaf springs of HINO FM260 which has undergone the Heat Treatment Process. In this study, the cutting toolss utilized were HSS, as well as cutting toolss made of used leaf springs with and without heat treatment. The heat treaments applied are including the one with Spherodizing at the temperature of70(fC, the one with Spherodizing and Hardening preheal process at the temperature of 82(fC and quenched into the water media, as well as the ones with Tempering processes at the temperatures of 30(f C and 55(f C. The testing methods which were applied in this study including the Chemical composition testing, hardness testing (vickers) and microstructure testing. The obtained results show that the material of leaf spring cutting tools is composed of C = 0,545%, Fe = 97,6%, Cr = 0,612%, Mo = 0,0193%, W = 0,0367%, V = 0,0341%, Mn = 0,992%. Meanwhile, the obtained results from hardness testing (vickers) show that the average of HSS cutting tools hardness is 869.443 VHN, the average of cutting tools without heat treatment hardness is 320.851 VHN , cutting tools with spherodizing treatment has an average of 174.887 VHN , the hardness of cutting tools which undergone spherodizing, hardening preheat and quenching treatment is 822.662 VHN, cutting tools spring subjected to quenching with additional tempering at 300°C has hardness average value of 564.340 VHN, and lastly the cutting tools spring which is subjected to hardening preheat with additional tempering treatment at 55(f C resulted hardness average value of307.551 VHN. On the other hand, the testing of microstructure results implied that the HSS cutting tools have martensitic, sementit (FefZ), and Carbide structure, cutting tools spring with non-heat treatment has pearlite and ferrite associated structure, cutting tools spring which was subjected to spherodizing treatment has pearlite, cementite ( Fe3C ) and ferrite associated structure, cutting tools with spherodizing and hardening preheat treatment has martensitic, pearlite and ferrite structure, cutting tools with hardening preheat and additional tempering at 3 OOP C has associated structure of martensitic, ferrite and pearlite , and lastly, the cutting tools hardening preheat and additional tempering at 55(fC has the structure of cementite ( Fe3C) , ferrite and pearlite association.
