Abstract
The Banyuasin River estuary is a dynamic and complex semi-enclosed estuary, heavily influenced by the interaction between freshwater from the mainland and saltwater from the sea. The ROFI (Region Of Freshwater Influence) zone in this area has physical characteristics influenced by temperature, salinity, currents, and tides. This study aims to analyze variations in temperature and salinity, the distribution of freshwater fractions, and the influence of oceanographic dynamics on water mass characteristics in the ROFI zone of the Banyuasin River Estuary. Data collection was conducted from October 13–16, 2024, in situ using CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) at 10 observation stations. Current data were measured using a floating droadge, and tidal data were obtained from SRGI-BIG. Data analysis was performed using Ocean Data View (ODV) software to generate vertical and horizontal spatial distributions of water masses, as well as to calculate freshwater fractions and freshwater transport volumes. The results show that the study area has a mixed tidal type leaning toward a single daily tide with a Formzahl value of 2.77. The highest surface temperature reached 33°C and the lowest salinity was 9.1 PSU, indicating strong stratification at a depth of 2–4 meters. Surface currents move upstream during high tide (0.03–0.34 m/s) and seaward during low tide (0.008–0.36 m/s). The highest freshwater fraction was found upstream at 0.73, while the maximum transport volume during low tide was recorded at 1973.8 m³/s.
