Abstract

Corrosion occurs in the most environment primarily in industrial production processes that intersect with a Chemical solution into the main thing in any conversation, because of the nature of the acid can reduce the quality of the metal. In this study discusses the corrosion rate of brass or called dezincification and corrosion of low carbon Steel in environments of ammonia (NH3) to determine the ratio of the rate of corrosion that occurs in brass metal with Steel metals in the environment and the same concentration as well as determine whether the brass can survive long in the ammonia environment compared to low carbon Steel. The study was conducted in a purely experimental laboratory. Object of this study is brass (61.265% Cu and 38.459% Zn) and low carbon Steel (0,0985 C) without heat treatment impersed in ammonia medium 0%, 5%, 10%, 50%, and 100% with an interval of 60 hours, 90 hours and 120 hours, respectively, and there were three samples. The results showed the highest corrosion rate on brass specimen with a concentration of 100% at 120 hours the reduction in weight of 1,059 grams and the lowest at 0% the concentration of ammonia at 0 grams weight reduction. While on low carbon Steel corrosion rate was seen at concentrations of 0% ammonia at 120 hours at 0.13533 gram, and the lowest concentration of 5%, 10%, 50%, and 100% at 0 grams. It can be concluded that the greater the concentration of ammonia and the longer time of soaking the corrosion rate at the higher brass. But in reversion occur only on low carbon Steel corroded at a concentration of 0% ammonia. From the results of testing the macro on the surface of the brass showing brass surface with 100% concentration had a lot of corrosion.
