Abstract
Composite is the mixture of two or more different materials made to get another material with better physical and mechanical characteristics compared to those of its every forming component. This research includes particle composite aimed to analyze the mechanical and physical characieristics of polypropylene (PP) matrix composite strenghtened by the coal fly ash. The observed physical and mechanical characteristics are the tensiie stress, tensile strain, eiasticity modulus, impact energy, and density value. Those charecteristics can be identified by conducting tensile test, impact test, and density test. The type of polypropylene (PP) used in this research is the pure polypropylene (PP) of PT. Pertamina (Persero) RU III Plaju, Palembang, while the filter used in this research is the coal fly ash of PT. Bukit Asam Tbk. (Persero) Tanjung Enim, Sumatra Selatan. The specimen is flrstly made by filtration method using mesh 300, then the material mixing is done by using blender, and then the material is heaied untii it is melted. The melted material is then molded by using hand lay up method and tested by using tensile Standard ASTM-638, impact JIS Z 2202, and ASTMD 292 density. The volume variants used are 75% PP 25%.fly ash, 70% PP 30%fly ash, 65% PP 35% fly ash, 60% PP 40% fly ash, dan 55% PP 45% fly ash. The optimum result got from the volume fraction variant 60% PP 40% fly ash is that the tensile stress is 49,19 N/mm2, the tensile strain is 12,53 %, the eiasticity modulus value is 3,92 N/mm2, impact energy value is 0,0550 J/mm2, and the density value is 1,2585 gr/mm3.
