Abstract

This research is to compare the mechanical properties and microstructure of medium carbon Steel with a salt concentration as a variable in this heat treatment for each holding time which are quenching at 830°C for holding time 40 minutes, then in temnerine at 500°C for holdine time 60 minutes. The variation of salt A. W W concentration used are 2 molarity, 3 molarityand 4 molarity which are reconstituted in 3 liter of water. The testing of mechanical properties used are impact testing, hardness testing, tensile testing and microstructure observation. The resuli of the research, For impact testing, the impact energy of non-heat treatment material is (124,069 joule), then the highest impact energy is quenchingtemper at 2 molarity (164,761 joule), while the lowest impact energy is quenching material at 4 molarity (58,542 joule). For hardness testing, the hardness value of non-heat treatment material is (145,679 kgf/mm2), then the highest hardness value is quenching material at 4 molarity (229,823 kgf/mm2), while the lowest hardness value is quench-temper at 2 molarity (109,277 kgf/mm2). For the tensile testing, the highest ultimate strength is on quenching material at 4 molarity (61,964 kgf/mm ) and the lowest ultimate strength is on quench-temper material at 2 molarity (66,527 kgf/mm2), then the highest strain is quench-temper material at 2 molarity (0,162083 %) the lowest strain is quenching material at 4 molarity (0,0675 %).
