Abstract
Development activities have had a negative impact on the environment in the form of pollution and damage which can ultimately reduce the carrying capacity, capacity, and productivity of the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to protect and manage the environment based on the principle of sustainability. The importance of protecting and managing the environment also needs to be supported by accurate data and information on the environment that can be used as a basis for its implementation. One of the information in question is information on environmental services as a water regulator in an area. Environmental services as a water regulator are the benefits of ecosystems and the environment for humans and the sustainability of life in relation to the process of water infiltration and periodic water release, with indicators of its condition being the capacity of infiltration and water retention and indicators of its performance being the quantity of infiltration and water retention and its influence on the hydrological area. Spatial analysis of changes in the performance of water regulating environmental services can provide an overview of future environmental conditions to be used as a consideration in formulating policy directions and implementing appropriate environmental management so that the decline in the performance of environmental services as water regulators in South Sumatra Province can be controlled. The purpose of this study was to map the performance of water regulating environmental services in South Sumatra Province in 2013 and 2023 and to analyze changes in the performance of water regulating environmental services in South Sumatra Province in the period 2013-2023. The research method began with collecting several secondary data obtained directly from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and the Public Works, Highways and Spatial Planning Agency of South Sumatra Province. Furthermore, an analysis of the mapping of water regulating environmental services was carried out using spatial analysis methods using GIS software by overlaying the parameters for determining environmental services including landscapes, natural vegetation types and land cover which were previously weighted and scored. In determining the level of change in environmental service performance, 2 land cover maps are needed in the study year in this case 2023 and the reference year in this case 2013. In order to perfect the analysis results, data verification was also carried out through field observations. The results of the analysis of water regulating environmental services in South Sumatra Province in 2013 and 2023 are classified into 5 (five) categories. In 2013, the most dominant performance of water regulating environmental services was the medium performance category, reaching 47% of the area of South Sumatra Province. Furthermore, the high category was 37%, the low category was 12%, the very high category was 4%, and the very low category was 0.01% of the area of South Sumatra Province. In 2023, the most dominant performance of water regulating environmental services was the medium category, reaching 55% of the area of South Sumatra Province. Furthermore, the very high category was 3%, the high category was 33%, the low category was 9% and very low was 0.01% of the area of South Sumatra Province. There was a change in the level of performance in all categories in the period from 2013 to 2023. The level of decline in the performance of water regulating environmental services in South Sumatra Province was 958,777.952 hectares or 11.05%, an increase in performance of 659,831.230 hectares or 7.63%, and no change in performance or remained the same at 7,056,395’337 hectares or 81.32%. The most extensive decline in performance occurred due to changes in land cover from swamp shrubs to plantations, covering an area of 365,205.742 hectares, changes in rice fields to plantations covering an area of 68,755.401 hectares, land cover from dry grass and swamp grass to plantations covering an area of around 55,966.945 hectares. The most extensive increase in performance occurred due to changes in land from open land to plantations, covering an area of 100,902.831 hectares and changes in shrubs to secondary dry land forests, covering an area of 59,055.234 hectares. Based on the research results, it can be suggested that attention needs to be paid to all development activities and utilization of natural resources in South Sumatra Province, especially those that result in changes in land cover that reduce the capacity of the ecosystem in providing environmental functions and services, including water regulation services.
