Abstract

The purpose of this research is to compare the mechanical properties and microstructure of the medium carbon Steel, with heat treatment or without heat treatment. The heat treatments used are quenching and quenching-temper. Medium carbon Steel who experiencing the quenching heat treatment on 860°C for 45 minutes with a palm oil as a cooling medium. After the quenching, then the medium carbon Steel tempered with temperature variation. Tempering temperature variations are 350°C, 450°C, and 550°C. As for the mechanical testing used are impact testing, tensile testing and Vickers testing and also microstructure observation. On Impact testing the average impact energy of medium carbon Steel is 124,069 Joule. However the lowest impact energy is from the quenching material which is 62,778 Joule. For tensile testing, the ultimate strength of quenching material at 860°C is 88,496 kgf7mm2, while the lowest ultimate strength is quench-temper material at 550°C which the value is 59,9483 kgf/mm2. Then the highest strain is on quench-temper material at 550°C which value is 0,1083% and the lowest strain is the quenching material at 860°C with its value 0,0583%. For the hardness testing, the value of the highest hardness is quenching material at 860°C with its value 170,5189 kgf/mm2. While the lowest hardness value is non heat treatment material which the value is 145,6799 kgf/mm2. on Key Words: Medium Carbon Steel, Temperature Variation, quenching, quenchtemper, Impact Testing, Tensile Testing, Hardness Testing, Microstructure
