Abstract
Rice farmers in facing the El Niño phenomenon must adopt adaptation strategies to prevent adverse impacts. The objectives of this study are: (1) to analyze the magnitude of changes in productivity and farmers’ income caused by the El Niño phenomenon in Pelabuhan Dalam Village, Pemulutan District, Ogan Ilir Regency; (2) to identify and describe the adaptation strategies implemented by rice farmers in facing the El Niño phenomenon in Pelabuhan Dalam Village, Pemulutan District, Ogan Ilir Regency. The sampling method was simple random sampling. A total of 45 rice farmers were selected from a population of 150 farmers. Data collected consisted of primary and secondary data, which were then processed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. During the El Niño phenomenon, rice farming productivity in Pelabuhan Dalam Village decreased by 54% compared to productivity in normal seasons. Farmers’ income also decreased by 34% due to lower rice production and higher selling prices. The level of rice farmers’ participation in adaptation strategies against El Niño was relatively low, with a score of only 10.79. This low participation was due to farmers’ lack of awareness of the importance of implementing mitigation measures to sustain their rice farming. The level of farmers’ adaptation strategies to the El Niño phenomenon in Pelabuhan Dalam Village was categorized as moderate, with a score of 32.37.
