Abstract

Chassis is one of the most important parts of a vehicle where it supports all parts of the vehicle such as passengers and the vehicle's engine itself. The desired chassis is to have good strength and light mass. In order to obtain good strength and mass, optimization can be done on the chassis design and perform static-stress simulation based on finite element method on vehicle chassis design, thus obtaining von mises, deflection, factor of safety, and mass. The safety factor taken in this study is 4, in order to avoid failure in the use of the chassis design. By comparing the values generated from the simulation, the most efficient skeletal mass will be obtained, which in this study is done on the chassis of urban car. This urban car on its original design has a rectangular hollow section with lenght x width x thick are lOOmm x 25mm x lmm. With the value of the stem profile, the optimization process is done three times with the reduction of the length on the profile of the trunk to be 85mm, 70mm, and 55mm. From the static stress simulation results on the initial and optimized chassis design, the initial design has a von mises, deflection, factor of safety, and mass are 25.68MPa, 0.45mm, 5.6, and 7.52kg. First optimization got the result that is, 21,74MPa, 0,59mm, 6,6, and 6,94kg. Second optimization obtained results that is, 26.92MPa, 0.86mm, 5.3, and 6.36kg. Third optimization got result that is, 36,55MPa, l,34mm, 3,96, and 5,77kg. From the results of this simulation, it can be concluded that the design of the stem profile in urban car chassis, most efficient chassis is on first optimization, because it has a lighter mass and the best safety factor.
