Abstract

Seafloor classification is an important approach in determining the potential fishing grounds for sondong gear in the waters of Banyuasin, South Sumatra. This study analyzes the physical characteristics of the waters through sediment type, organic matter content, depth, and their relationship with catch results. The dry sieving and pipette methods were used for sediment grain size analysis, while organic matter content was analyzed using the Loss on Ignition (LOI) method. Depth data were obtained acoustically and represent instantaneous conditions at the time of measurement. Zone classification was carried out using K-Means Cluster Analysis and Discriminant Analysis. The results show that the dominant sediment type is clayey sand with organic matter content ranging from 5–20%, categorized as low to high. Water depth ranges from 1.03 to 4.14 meters relative to each trip. The fishing ground zones are divided into three main categories: productive, moderate, and inefficient. Cross-validation of the discriminant analysis produced a classification accuracy of 87.9%, indicating the reliability of the method in mapping potential fishing zones.
