Abstract

The objective of this research was to test the performance of floating pellet maker machine that originated from the workshop of local agricultural tools and machines. This research was conducted in Agricultural Engineering Workshop. Technology Department of Agriculture, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya, South Sumatera in March to Oktober 2015. The working mechanism of single screw type pellet maker in this research used of friction force and compressive force (press). Frictional force and the compressive force can occur when the friction between the tube and the materials that flow through to the hopper. Incoming material through the hopper would be driven by a screw that rotates to the pellet mold (die). After the incoming material was forced out through small holes (die), it would be back to normal pressure (atmospheric) instantly when the product passes through the die hole. Three steps method was used in this research which consisted of pellet maker machine design and material preparation, machine operation and machine testing. The observed parameters were theoritical capacity (kg/hour), effective capacity (kg/hour), machine efficiency (%), broken pellet (%), fuel consumption (l/hour), water content of material (%), and capacity of floating pellet (sec). The results showed that the difference of blade and mesh size diameter affected the highest theoritical machine capacity of 4MP D2 23.00 kg/hour and the smallest of 2MP D4 21.51 kg/hour, the highest effective machine capacity 2MP 22 45.11 kg/hour and the smallest 4MP D2 32.22 kg/hour, the highest machine efficiency 4MP 2D 71.38 % and the smallest 2MP 2D 47.69 %, the highest broken pellet 2MP 2D 19.05 % and the smallest 4MP 4D 13.09 %, the highest fuel consumption 2MP 2D 1.18 l/hour and the smallest 4MP 2D 0.45 l/hour, the highest water content of material 2MP 4D 11.7 % and the smallest 4MP 4D 10.8 %, and the highest of floating pellet 4MP 4D 35.2 sec and the smallest 2MP 4D 24.56 sec.
