Abstract

Natural or intact peatlands are important carbon stores because they can sequester large amounts of carbon. An estimated 500-700 Gt of organic carbon globally is stored in peatlands. The physical characteristics of peat that are important in its utilization include moisture content, bulk density (BD), total pore space, soil permeability, soil color, and peat maturity. This research method uses a survey method with a semi-detailed level at a scale of 1:20,000. The results of the research at the location have a very high moisture content with an average of 484.83%, BD is low with an average value of 0.45g cm³, total pore space reaches an average of 82.54%, showing a very porous structure, soil permeability in peat is also very fast with an average of 30.40 m s-¹, soil color is mostly black, and peat maturity varies between half mature and mature.
