Abstract

The quality of English instruction in rural Indonesian schools remains low due to limited resources, infrastructure, and teacher training. While various initiatives aim to address this issue, little attention has been given to teacher-led innovations, particularly those by Guru Penggerak, a government-supported teacher leadership program. This study explores how Guru Penggerak implements learning innovations to improve English education in two rural schools in Musi Banyuasin Regency. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation. Two experienced Guru Penggerak participated, sharing their perspectives, practices, and challenges. The findings show that innovation is perceived not as the use of advanced technology, but as creative, context-sensitive strategies that respond to student needs. Methods such as collaborative project-based learning and reflective low-tech tools were used to engage learners and support language acquisition. Key challenges included poor infrastructure and low student motivation caused by socioeconomic factors. Despite this, the teachers applied flexible, student-centered approaches to overcome barriers. The study highlights that teacher-driven, context-aware pedagogical innovation can play a critical role in enhancing English learning in undeserved rural areas.
