Abstract

Physical work involving non-ergonomic postures and prolonged working hours is associated with an increased risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), particularly in the railway maintenance industry. Workers in the production unit of UPT Balai Yasa Lahat are exposed to MSDs due to tasks such as lifting, pulling, and assembling train and locomotive components. This study aimed to identify factors associated with MSD complaints among production unit workers. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted involving 75 workers from seven divisions selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the CMDQ questionnaire and REBA method, then analyzed using univariate, bivariate (chi square and Fisher’s exact tests), and simple logistic regression. The most frequent complaints were in the left upper arm (12.80%), neck (10.12%), and right lower leg (8.92%). Significant associations were found with age (p=0.027), length of employment (p=0.001), physical workload (p=0.013), and coupling (p=0.025), while exercise habits, working duration, and posture showed no significant association. No significant association was found for the 'no physical workload' category (p = 0.360). It is concluded that MSD complaints are influenced by both individual and work-related factors. Routine evaluation using CMDQ and REBA, ergonomic interventions for high-risk workers, provision of proper work aids, and promotion of stretching and strengthening exercises are recommended to reduce musculoskeletal complaints.
