Abstract

This study examines the impact of GRDP from agricultural, mining, and manufacturing sectors on the Environmental Quality Index (EQI) in Southern Sumatra during 2013-2022, utilizing panel data regression analysis with Fixed Effect Model (FEM) from five provinces (South Sumatra, Jambi, Lampung, Bengkulu, and Bangka Belitung). Results indicate that agricultural and mining sector GRDP shows a positive and significant impact on EQI, while manufacturing sector GRDP exhibits a significant negative impact on environmental quality. Collectively, all three sectors significantly influence EQI , explaining 18.41% of environmental quality variation and confirming that economic development affects environmental quality differently across sectors. The findings suggest the need for sector-specific environmental policies, particularly promoting sustainable agricultural practices that enhance environmental quality, implementing stricter regulations for manufacturing activities to mitigate negative environmental impacts, while encouraging the adoption of clean technologies in mining operations to achieve balanced economic growth with environmental preservation in Southern Sumatra.
