Abstract

Open defecation (OD) was identified as a sanitation issue in Indonesia, including in 14 Ulu Village, Palembang City. This practice had negative impacts on health and the environment, particularly in areas where proper sanitation facilities and ac- cess to clean water were not provided. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between ownership of healthy latrines and availability of clean water with open defecation practices. A quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach was employed in this study. A sample of 96 respondents was selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through interviews using questionnaires and latrine observations. Analysis was performed univariately, bivariately (chi-square test), and multivariately (logistic regression). The chi-square analysis showed significant relationships between education (p-value = 0.006; PR = 2,548; CI: 1,31-4,95), ownership of healthy latrines (p = 0.001; PR = 14,85; CI: 5,70- 38,69), and availability of clean water (p-value = 0.001; PR = 4,41; CI: 2,11-9,23) with open defecation practices. Meanwhile, no significant relationships were found between age (p-value = 0.235), occupation (p-value = 0.627), and the role of health workers (p-value = 0.972) with open defecation practices. The multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that ownership of healthy latrines was the most dominant factor influencing open defecation practices (p<0.001; PR =298.502; CI: 30.457–2925.533). In conclusion, the most influential factor associated with open defecation in 14 Ulu Village was ownership of healthy latrines. Efforts to improve access to healthy latrines and clean water facilities were recommended to support the acceleration of achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) targets.
