Abstract

Stereotypes toward Indonesian female K-Pop fans are frequently discussed in public spaces, one of which appears in the Close The Door podcast featuring Daggy, which conveys negative stigma about the deviant behavior of K-Pop fangirls. The episode received various responses, particularly from Generation Z as active digital audiences who have a strong connection to Korean popular culture. This study aims to examine how the encoding process of stereotyping messages is constructed by the communicator through ten preferred readings, as well as how Generation Z decodes those messages. The research adopts Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model using a qualitative approach. The encoding process is analyzed through three indicators: knowledge framework, relations of production, and technical infrastructure, all of which contribute to how the messages are shaped. Meanwhile, the decoding process is analyzed through three audience positions: dominant, negotiated, and oppositional. The findings show that the most dominant decoding position is negotiated. Generation Z does not entirely accept or reject the media message but rather interprets it selectively based on personal experiences, social environment, and digital media consumption. These findings affirm that Gen Z audiences are active, critical, and responsive in interpreting media messages, and reveal a tension between the encoded messages and how audiences reconstruct their meanings.
