Abstract
Ganoderma boninense is the major pathogen causing basal stem rot (BSR) disease in oil palm, leading to significant economic losses. Alternative control strategies are required to reduce the reliance on chemical fungicides. This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity of cardamom root exudates (Elettaria cardamomum) and gambier tannins (Uncaria gambir) against the growth of G. boninense. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design using combinations of cardamom root exudates (GF and CGF: 0.31%, 1.25%, and 5%) with gambier tannins (0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, 1.0%, and 1.25%). Observed parameters included colony growth inhibition percentage, electrical conductivity (EC) values as an indicator of electrolyte leakage, and microscopic observation of hyphal morphology. The results showed that the combination of cardamom root exudates and gambier tannins significantly inhibited G. boninense colony growth compared to the control. The treatment of GF 5% + tannin 1.0% resulted in the highest inhibition (83.3%) with the highest EC value, indicating severe cell membrane damage. Microscopic observations revealed fragmentation, thinning, and hyphal abnormalities at higher concentrations, which contrasted with the intact and dense hyphae observed in the control. These findings suggest that cardamom root exudates and gambier tannins possess potential as natural antifungal agents against G. boninense and could be further developed as an environmentally friendly control strategy.
