Abstract

This study aims to examine influence of workload and work motivation on performance of civil servant administrative staff at Sriwijaya University. Employee performance is a critical factor in ensuring efficiency and quality of administrative services in higher education institutions. An unbalanced workload and low motivation levels are suspected to contribute to declining staff productivity. A quantitative research design was employed using a structured questionnaire and multiple linear regression analysis. The sample consisted of 162 respondents, proportionally selected from 11 faculties and central administrative units. The results indicate that workload has a negative and statistically significant effect on performance (β = -0.275; p < 0.05), while work motivation has a positive and statistically significant effect (β = 0.451; p < 0.05). Variables significantly explain variations in employee performance (R² = 0.438). These findings underscore the importance of equitable workload distribution and strategies to enhance employee motivation in achieving optimal performance. Theoretical implications reinforce Goal Setting Theory, which posits that clearly defined goals and strong motivation are key drivers of employee performance. This study approach to human resource management to meet operational challenges in higher education institutions. Keywords: administrative staff, employee performance, higher education, human resource management, work motivation, workload.
