Abstract
This study aims to analyze the causality between income inequality and government expenditure in eight ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia, over the period 2003–2022. The study employs a quantitative approach using Granger causality analysis through the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) to identify the short-term and long-term causal dynamics between the variables. The data used are secondary data obtained from various relevant international sources. The results indicate that there is no significant causality from income inequality to government expenditure in ASEAN-8, either in the short term or the long term. Conversely, a significant unidirectional causality from government expenditure to income inequality is found. This suggests that fiscal policy direction, particularly increased government spending, has the potential to reduce or stabilize inequality in some countries, although its effects are not uniform across the region.
