Abstract

Street sweepers are part of the informal employment sector that is highly vulnerable to musculoskeletal disorders due to repetitive physical movements and non-ergonomic working postures maintained over prolonged periods. This study aims to provide a detailed description of ergonomic risks experienced by street sweepers in Palembang City. The research design employed was descriptive observational using a case study approach. Eight informants aged over 30 and with more than 20 years of work experience were selected through purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out using in-depth interviews and direct observation of work activities. The Nordic Body Map (NBM) method was used to assess ergonomic risk levels. Findings indicate that most street sweepers suffer from low back pain (LBP), muscle stiffness, and discomfort in the shoulders and back due to prolonged bending postures. Postural analysis revealed that the majority of respondents were categorized in the moderate to high ergonomic risk level. Recommended interventions include ergonomic training, improvement of work tools to suit workers’ physical characteristics, task rotation, and adequate rest breaks. This study offers essential insights for the development of occupational health and safety programs, especially in improving the well-being of informal sector workers in Indonesia.
