Abstract
Background: CSOM is a condition that can impact various aspects of life, including the patient's physical, social, and psychological well-being. Medical therapy using topical antibiotics is the primary treatment for safe-type active-phase CSOM. This study aimed to evaluate changes in the quality of life of CSOM patients based on the COMQ-12 after topical antibiotics were administered at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang. Methods: A quasi-experimental, one-group pre- and post-design study was undertaken in the Otology Division of the Ear Nose Throat – Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Muhammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang, from February to April 2025. Twenty-five patients with safe-type unilateral active-phase CSOM received antibiotic therapy with ofloxacin ear drops twice daily. Patients' quality of life was assessed before and after therapy using the COMQ-12 questionnaire. An increase in the COMQ-12 score indicates a decrease in quality of life. Results: This study showed that after one week of antibiotic administration, there was no significant decrease in the total COMQ-12 score (p = 0.182); there were significant changes in symptom severity (p = 0.000); impact on lifestyle and work (p = 0.000); impact on health care (p = 0.000), and general (p = 0.000). Furthermore, after 2 weeks of antibiotic therapy, there was a significant decrease in the total COMQ-12 score (p = 0.004); reduced symptom severity (p = 0.000); increased impact on lifestyle and work (p = 0.000), increased impact on health care (p = 0.009), and reduced general domain (p = 0.000). Conclusion: Topical antibiotics for 2 weeks can improve the quality of life of CSOM patients. Keywords: COMQ-12, CSOM, Quality of Life, Topical Antibiotics, Ofloxacin Ear Drops
