Abstract

This research is about the representation of social criticism in the film “Berdoa, Mulai” with Roland Barthes semiotic analysis. This research aims to analyze the representation of social criticism related to religious domination in the short film “Berdoa, Mulai” by Tanzilal Azizie through Roland Barthes semiotic approach. The film raises the issue of the dominance of the majority religion (Islam) over minority groups (Catholics) in Indonesia, which is reflected through the experience of the main character, Ruth, a Catholic teenager living in a Muslim-majority neighborhood. The research uses a qualitative method with Barthes two-level semiotic analysis technique, denotation, connotation, and myth, to reveal the implied meanings in the scenes and dialog of the film. The results show that the film “Berdoa, Mulai” cinematically represents forms of majority religious hegemony in social and educational life, such as domination of the education system, uniformity of cultural identity, and imposition of social adjustment by the majority group. This representation is presented through visual and narrative symbols that illustrate the inequality and pressure experienced by minority groups. The social criticism conveyed by this film is not merely a form of resistance, but as a reflective invitation to build collective awareness about the importance of equality and tolerance in a multicultural society.
