Abstract
Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. Complications of DM can cause neurodegenerative damage to the retina, such as thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and retinal ganglion cell layer (RGC). This nerve damage lead to visual function impairment, including decrease in contrast sensitivity. This study aims to analyze the correlation between RNFL and RGC thickness with contrast sensitivity in DM patients without diabetic retinopathy manifestation at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. Methods: This descriptive study used a case series design. The thickness of the RNFL and RGC layers was measured using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), while contrast sensitivity was measured using the Pelli Robson Chart. The data obtained were then analyzed with Spearman Rho's test. Results: This study found a negative correlation between HbA1c level and the duration of DM with contrast sensitivity, which indicates that poor glycemic control and longer disease duration were associated with decrease in contrast sensitivity. In addition, there was a strong significant positive correlation between RNFL thickness (r = 0.640; p = 0.000) and RGC thickness (r = 0.758; p = 0.000) with contrast sensitivity. Conclusion: A decrease in RNFL and RGC thickness of 1 µm can decrease contrast sensitivity by 0.016 LogUnit CS.
