Abstract
Background: Strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes that not only impairs visual function but also affects patients’ psychosocial well-being. Surgical correction of strabismus is expected to improve patients’ quality of life in both functional and psychosocial aspects. Objective: To evaluate the effect of operative intervention on psychosocial and functional quality of life in strabismus patients using the Adult Strabismus-20 (AS-20) questionnaire and its modification. Methods: This was a prospective study with a pre–post test design conducted at Optik Prima Palembang from November 2024 to April 2025. A total of 34 strabismus patients aged ≥3 years who met the inclusion criteria were recruited using consecutive sampling. The AS-20 questionnaire was administered to adult patients and a modified AS-20 for children, completed before and after surgery. Data analysis was performed using paired t-test or Wilcoxon test depending on data distribution. Results: Most subjects were male (61.8%), children (70.6%), had primary school education (70.6%), and monthly income ≥Palembang minimum wage (67.6%). The majority presented with exotropia (70.6%), with deviations of 25–50 PD and >50 PD. All patients had congenital strabismus and diplopia. Postoperatively, all patients achieved orthophoria. Significant improvements were observed in AS-20 scores across psychosocial, functional, and total domains (p<0.05), indicating enhanced quality of life following surgery. Conclusion: Operative intervention significantly improves psychosocial and functional quality of life in strabismus patients. These findings highlight the importance of strabismus surgery not only for cosmetic alignment but also for psychological and social well-being.
