Abstract

Background: Cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii) based herbal denture cleansers has been widely studied in previous research. The results showed that cinnamon has minimal effects on the mechanical properties of acrylic resin, including impact strength, transverse strength, and surface roughness, while still demonstrating effectiveness in inhibiting microorganisms. Based on these findings, further development was carried out through the formulation and physical evaluation stages of the denture cleanser solution. Aim: The purpose of this study was to identify a stable and safe formulation of a denture cleansing solution containing cinnamon extract (Cinnamomum burmanii). This development was conducted as an innovation to utilize herbal ingredients as denture cleansers, which are expected to be applicable for community use. Materials and Methods: Formulations were prepared with three concentrations: FI (1%), FII (2%), and FIII (3%). The study stages included: (1) collection of cinnamon bark, (2) preparation of cinnamon extract, (3) formulation of denture cleanser solution, (4) physical evaluations including organoleptic, pH test, density, and viscosity, and (5) data analysis. Data were presented descriptively in tables and narratives. Results: All formulations showed a yellow color with a distinctive aroma and varying intensity, clear solution appearance, as well as density and viscosity values that met the quality requirements for physical stability. The pH value of formulation FIII on day 14 was found to be outside the expected range. Conclusion: The 1% cinnamon extract formulation (FI) showed a greater pH decrease compared to the 2% (FII) and 3% (FIII) formulations. All formulations exhibited viscosity values above 3 cP, approaching the expected range, and fulfilled the physical quality requirements. However, FIII is unsuitable for long-term use as its pH was found to be outside the acceptable range.
