Abstract

ABSTRACT Clean water is a vital human need, yet access to it often becomes a major issue. To ensure water is safe for use, filtration systems are commonly applied, but over time the filter’s performance decreases due to clogging of the filter media. Traditionally, the cleaning process or backwash is carried out manually, which is less efficient, time-consuming, and may reduce filtration performance if not done regularly. The main purpose of designing an automatic backwash system using PVC pipe filters is to maintain filter media cleanliness independently and routinely without user intervention. This system operates by reading and calculating the water flow rate through a waterflow sensor. When the flow rate drops or the calculated pressure exceeds a threshold, the system detects clogging and the Arduino Uno microcontroller activates a relay to open the solenoid valve, initiating an automatic backwash until the set criteria are achieved. The research results show that the sensor error is only 0.57%, the error in pressure increase calculation based on flow rate is 4.6%, the backwash performance error is 1.35%, and the backwash volume output error is 4.5%. These relatively small errors do not affect system performance. Therefore, the automatic backwash system is proven effective in maintaining filter performance, efficient in water usage, and beneficial in improving clean water quality and simplifying maintenance, thus supporting sustainable water management.
