Abstract

This research analyze the protection coordination of the Over Current Relay (OCR) and Ground Fault Relay (GFR) on the Express Seluma Feeder at PT. PLN (Persero) ULP Manna. The background for this study is the frequent occurrence of short circuit faults, recorded 187 times during the period of January to August 2024, which requires an evaluation for optimizing the protection system. The objectives of this research are to determine the characteristics of short-circuit fault currents and to optimize the time and current coordination of the relays to ensure selective protection. The methodology used includes manual calculation of short-circuit currents for single-phase-to-ground, two-phase, and three-phase faults, as well as simulations using ETAP 19.0.1 software for validation. The relay settings obtained from manual calculations are very close to the ETAP simulation results. Based on the analysis, the TMS value for the Express Seluma OCR is 0.146 (manual) and 0.155 (simulation), while for the GFR it is 0.20 (manual) and 0.201 (simulation). The proposed relay settings based on the analysis are proven to work selectively, where the relay closest to the fault will operate first to isolate the affected area, which is validated through ETAP simulations. Nevertheless, there is a significant difference between the settings from the calculation results and the actual setting data from PLN, indicating that PLN may apply safety factors or other operational considerations in determining the settings in the field.
