Abstract
Watermelon is a fruit of a herba plant that grows vines that originated in Africa, then growth rapidly to many countries in both tropical and subtropical regions. The objective of this research was to know the effect organic fertilizer empty fruit bunches of oil palm on the growth and yield of watermelon. This research was conducted at the experimental station of Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sriwijaya, Indralaya, Ogan Ilir, South Sumatera, from March through May 2015. The design that used in this study is a Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of 9 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments were Control (without fertilizer) (P0), NPK fertilizer 800 kg Ha-1 (P1), chicken manure fertilizer 12 tons Ha-1 (P2), the empty fruit bunches of oil palm compost of 3 tons Ha-1 (P3), the empty fruit bunches of oil palm compost of 6 tons Ha-1 (P4), the empty fruit bunches of oil palm compost of 9 tons Ha-1 (P5), the empty fruit bunches of oil palm compost of 12 tons Ha-1 (P6), the empty fruit bunches of oil palm compost of 15 tons Ha-1 (P7), the empty fruit bunches of oil palm compost of 18 tons Ha-1 (P8). The results showed that used of inorganic (16:16:16) 800 Kg Ha-1 can be substituted with organic fertilizer chicken manure 12 tons Ha-1 or the empty fruit bunches of oil palm compost of 3 tons Ha-1 (P3) gave the best yield of watermelon.
