Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the effect of particle size and adhesive type on physical and mechanical properties of Pulai (Alstonia scholaris) particle board. The research was conducted at Agricultural Technology Department Workshop, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University and Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Sriwijaya University from August till December 2016. This research used a factorial completely randomized design with two factors and three replications. The first factor was particle size (10 mesh, 20 mesh, and 30 mesh) and the second factor was adhesive types (polyvinyl acetate adhesives and urea formaldehyde). Parameters observed were water content, particle board volume expansion, particle board density, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity. The results showed that the particle size had significant effect on modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity, particle board density and particle board volume expansion, whereas the adhesive types had significant effect on modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity, particle board density, particle board volume expansion and moisture content. The interaction between particle size and adhesive type had significant effect on particle board density and particle board volume expansion. The treatment of A3B2 (particle size 30 mesh and urea formaldehid) was found to be best treatment with the modulus of rupture 12.93 kgf/cm2, modulus of elasticity 1351.97 kgf/cm2, density of 0.34 g/cm3, particle board volume expansion of 5.46 % and water content of 9.58 %.
