Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the effect of water application period and combined agricultural waste and swamp soil growing media on water content, water use efficiency, growth, and production of cherry tomato plants (Lycopersicon cerasiformae) using drip irrigation system. This research was conducted from February until August 2016 at Exprimental site of Agricultural Faculty, Sriwijaya University. The method used in this study was Randomized Block Design using two factors of water application and growing media with three replications. Treatment factor consisted of daily water application and discontinuous water application (intermittent one day), growing media was consisted of ultisol, sand and charcoal husk; ultisol, sand and empty fruit bunches; ultisol, goat manure and rice husk. The Observed Parameter were water content and water use efficiency with indicators of temperature, relative humidity, plant height, number of leaves, number of fruits. The best cherry tomato water content was found on mixture of ultisol soil, rice husk and goat manure growing media. The highest water use efficiency for cherry tomato was on A1B3 treatment (every day on mixture of ultisol soil, rice husk and goat manure growing media) of 41.19 kg.m-3. Water application period of A1 (continuous) and A2 (intermittent) and plant media treatment B1 (ultisol soil, sand, husk), B2 (ultisol soil, sand, empty fruit bunch) and B3 (ultisol soil, manure goat, and rice husk) had significant effect on water content, plant height, and number of leaves. Each treatments had no significant effect on cherry tomato fruit number.
