Abstract

Coral reef ecosystems have an important role as a place for foraging, breeding for marine biota such as sea urchins. Tangkil Island has various types of marine life that live around these waters. The purposes of this study were to identify the type and abundance of sea urchins, percentage of coral cover, and the relation of abundance of sea urchins to the percentage of coral cover on Tangkil island of Lampung bay. The study was conducted in August 2016. The study had 4 point stations located in the cluster of corals and in the ecosystem of sea urchins. The method used collecting data of the abundance of sea urchins and the percentage of coral cover was 1x1 meter square transect with a 50 meter long roll meter parallel to the coastline. There were two types of sea urchin found; they were Diadema setosum and Echinothrix calamaris. Abundance of sea urchin type DC setosum were 1.24-3.12 ind/m2 and abundance of E calamaris was 0.09-0.36 ind/m2. Coral species were found Acropora Branching, Acropora Digitate, Acropora Encrusting, Acropora Tabulate, Coral Branching, Coral Foliose, Coral Massive, Coral Mushrom. Percentage of live coral cover was 25.15-32.93%, dead coral was 4.04-19.19%, dead coral with algae were 41.92-68.28%, and substrate were 2.53-19.6%. The value of the diversity of sea urchin 0.13-0.47 was in the low category, the uniformity of sea urchin, 0.19-0.68 was also in the low category, the dominance of sea urchins 0.70-0.94 was in category with genus. Reef diversity values 0.97-1.25 was in the low category, coral uniformity 0.60-0.77 in medium category, coral reef dominance 0.29-0.38 in category with no genus. The correlation between the abundance of sea urchins and the percentage of coral cover was linear with a correlation value of 0.7029. Therefore if the percentage of coral cover is low then the abundance of sea urchins will also be low vice versa.
