Abstract

The objective of this research was to design the early potential system for peat forest fires through Short Message Service (SMS) using ATMega 16 AVR Microcontroller. The research was conducted at Laboratory of Energy and Electrification, Department of Agricultural Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sriwijaya, Indralaya, South Sumatra and Research and Standardization Industry Laboratory from January to April 2015. The method used in this research were Problem-Solving Methodology and analyzed with descriptive method. The stages in the design of the equipment were as follows: identified needs, defined problems, collected information, drew the concept, evaluated and communicated the results. Testing was done by using peat, reeds, and softwoods as smoke sources and ambient temperature in the open air. The measured parameters were speed of the service provider, accuracy, ambient air temperature, CO content in smoke and power supply. The design of this tool was work well. The microcontroller read the program and displays the value of the temperature and smoke spread in open air on the LCD screen and operator mobile phone with lag time 5 minutes. If the tool had reached the requirements specified in the program (temperature > 370C or distribution of smoke CO > 15 ppm), the relay provided information directly. The result showed that the fastest speed of the service provider in this system was 6.12 seconds with average relative error equipment temperatures of 2.29% and the smoke of 1,26%. This system required electrical current of 0.30 A with usage period of 9 days by using a battery of Aki Yuasa 12 volts DC 10 AH.
