Abstract

Background: Uremic pruritus is a sensation that directs the urge to scratch, often in patients with chronic renal failure who undergo hemodialysis. Uremic pruritus is often a major problem for patients with end-stage renal disease and is common in 10-85% of hemodialysis patients. The severity of uremic pruritus in hemodialysis patients is common in elderly men. In previous studies the severity of uremic pruritus varied from mild to severe. Method: This study aims to determine the correlation of clinical characteristics and severity of uremic pruritus in patients who receive hemodialysis chronic renal failure. Samples were taken from uremic pruritus patients undergoing hemodialysis in January 2018 using the consecutive sampling method. The data were obtained from the medical record of uremic pruritus patients and questionnaires at hemodialysis installation of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in January 2018. Results: Patients in uremic pruritus had the most moderate itch that is 40 patients (44,4%), dominated by men, 59 patients (65,6%), most commonly at the age of 59 to 66 years that is 22 patients (24,4%), and all patients duration of hemodialysis 1 to 5 years with frequency 2 times a week. Based on the results of the study there is no relationship between age and severity of uremic pruritus. Conclusion: From this study, it can be concluded that the characteristics based on sociodemographic are mostly in patients with men, with moderate severity of pruritus. There is no relationship between age and severity.
