Abstract

Background. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder caused by the pancreas that cannot produce enough insulin or insulin resistance. Management of DM begins with applying a healthy lifestyle (medical nutrition therapy and physical activity) along with pharmacological interventions. Medical nutrition therapy in principle is setting a balanced diet and according the calories needs of each individual. To achieve a balanced diet and the amount calories needs, DM patients must have good nutrition knowledge about DM. The aim of this study to determine the relation between the level of knowledge about macronutrients with the adequate and balance of macronutrient intake for type 2 DM patients. Method. This study was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. Tis study was conducted at Puskesmas Sako Palembang in November to December 2018. The sample in this study was type 2 DM patients who treated at Puskesmas Sako Palembang that met the inclusion criteria. Data obtained by direct interviews with patients were then analyzed by Chi Square test using SPSS version 25. Results. Based on the analysis of the relation between the knowledge of macronutrients and the adequate macronutrient intake in type 2 DM patients, p=0,000 (p<0.05). The analysis of the relation between the knowledge of macronutrients and the balance of macronutrient intake in type 2 DM patients p=0,000 (p<0.05). Conclusion. There was a significant relationship between the knowledge of macronutrients with the adequate and balance of macronutrient intake in type 2 DM patients.
