Abstract

The research objective was to design and to fabricate biomass fuel stove through the addition of two tubes and one stove head. It was conducted at Farm Machinery and Equipment Workshop, Agricultural Engineering Study Program, Agricultural Technology Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University and Skill Training Council (BLK) Kenten Laut, Palembang. It was conducted from August 2014 to March 2015. The research used engineering design method which consisted three stages as follows : 1). Equipment design approach, 2) Equipment fabrication stage and 3). Equipment components testing which consisted of structural design, functional design and equipment perfomance. The observed parameters were combustion operational time, combustion fuel consumption rate, specific gasification rate, heat energy input, combustion efficiency and ash percentage. Modification of two tubes stove using biomass fuel was designed to utilize biomass as an alternative fuel that consisted of equipment frame, stove head, gas distribution pipe, hopper, reactor tube, ash container, ash box and blower. This stove had frame dimension of 130 cm in length, 56 cm in width and 129 cm in height. Stove head had two cylinders with diameter 19 cm and height 16 cm for the first cylinder and diameter 12 cm and height 13 cm for the second cylinder. Gas distribution pipe had diameter 5 cm with sloping pipe length of 71 cm and upright pipe length of 17 cm. Hopper had diameter of 5 cm and height of 7 cm. Reactor tubes had outer diameter of 25 cm and inner diameter of 22.5 cm with respective heights of 45 cm. Ash container had length of 45.8 cm, width of 27 cm and height of 12.5 cm. Ash box had length of 45.6 cm, width of 26.8 cm and height of 12.3 cm. This modified stove was worked properly using rice husk biomass which was shown by the following characteristics : combustion operational time of 0.4 hour, combustion fuel consumption rate of 2.5 kg.h-1, specific gasification rate of 62,9 kg.m2.h-1, heat energy input of 3,690.88 kcal, combustion efficiency of 4.06% and ash percentage of 43%.
