Abstract
White tea (Camellia sinensis) contains high of polyphenols in the form of catechins, so that it can act as immunomodulators. This study aims to determine the immunomodulatory effects of white tea steeping in rats induced hepatitis B vaccine. Wistar male rats were divided into six groups consisting of normal control, negative control, positive control, and the treatment group of white tea steeping with multilevel dose of 6 g/day, 12 g/day, and 24 g/day. Rats induced by hepatitis B vaccine twice on day 0 and day 21 with a dose of 0.18 mL to see immune reactions. The parameters measured were the percentage of lymphocytes, monocytes percentage and phagocytic activity of macrophages. The results showed the higher dosing of white tea steeping can increase in the percentage of lymphocytes and monocytes, but statistically the lymphocytes showed significant differences only at the dose of 24 g/day while on monocytes was no significant difference. The percentage of lymphocytes on day 7 increased on day 14, while the percentage of monocytes on day 7 decreased on day 14. Phagocytic activity of macrophages can be seen from the macrophage phagocytosis index, based on observation showed the higher dosing of white tea steeping can increase in activity of macrophages and statistically have significant differences between groups. The increase occurred as a result of infection of hepatitis B vaccine and white tea steeping administration as an immunomodulator. The results of this study prove white tea steeping dose of 6, 12, and 24 g/day has the effect imunomoduloator with the most excellent effect on dose of 24 g/day.
